Music labels and iTunes as an additional source of revenue

"Things are rapidly changing in the record industry, and that "record contract" doesn't mean so much any more. Rob Halford of Judas Priest recently created his own label, and purchased the rights to all of his solo stuff. He now sells it off his own website and thru iTunes. Metallica is also selling music off their website. The "big guys" are starting to follow the little guys." - Phil Bowyer. Could this be a trend that grows? Or perhaps is it only for those that have already enjoyed exposure and have a popular following?

Traffic generation is the business aim of any artist. If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, did it fall? For new bands and musicians who are not mainstream, the music rights you do own could be sold on your own website and trough iTunes for greater exposure. It makes good business sense. Aim for the stars and you might just hit the moon.
